The Challenge & Context

The Problem

During a nationwide marketing promotion, the platform database locked up completely due to un-indexed queries and connection pool exhaustion, rendering the site 100% inaccessible.

Project Constraints

Key Constraints

  • Live webinar starting in under 1 hour with thousands of paying attendees waiting
  • Previous contractor was unreachable
Solution Architecture

Technical Approach & Execution

Joined emergency bridge within 15 minutes, identified locking queries using pg_stat_activity, killed runaway transactions, increased connection pool limits, and deployed Redis query caching.

Phase 01

Emergency Database Lock Release

Identified blocking table locks caused by un-indexed analytics logging, terminated deadlocked transactions safely.

Phase 02

Connection Pool & Cache Layer Stabilization

Implemented PgBouncer connection pooling and cached live session metadata in Redis to absorb the incoming traffic spike.

Infrastructure Topology

Cloud & Deployment

  • Linux VPS Cluster
  • PgBouncer Connection Pooler
  • PostgreSQL with Emergency Indexing
  • Redis Session Caching

Key Engineering Lessons Learned:

  • Immediate forensic query inspection prevented the client from making panic server restarts that would have prolonged downtime
